The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2024 event which took place on from March 22nd to 23rd, 2023, at the University of Rwanda-College of Science and Technology auditorium was not just a gathering of young minds but a platform for igniting change and inspiring leadership. Hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Rwanda, the event was graced by esteemed guests including the Minister of Youth and Arts, Hon. Dr. Jean Nepo Abdallah Utumatwishima, and Rotary International President, Gordon McInally. It served as a beacon of hope for the youth, urging them to leverage their potential for the betterment of their communities.
As part of the event, three Interact clubs namely Gashora Girls, Kigali International Community School and Agahozo Shalomand the Rotaract club of UTB-Rubavu were chartered.. During the charter ceremony, Hon. Dr. Utumatwishima emphasized the importance of community service and leadership development. He expressed optimism about the potential of the club members to make significant contributions, not only locally but globally.
President McInally echoed these sentiments, highlighting Rotary’s belief that peace transcends mere absence of conflict. He commended Rwanda’s leadership for providing opportunities for youth development, emphasizing the role of education and empowerment in fostering peace and stability.
The event also featured two panel discussions. The first was under the theme of “Employment and Job Creation for Youth as a Catalyst for Global Peace,” and featured leaders from various sectors. Cynthia Umutoniwabo, CEO of Loopa and winner of the Hanga Pitchfest 2023 , emphasized the importance of alliances and community support in achieving success, urging youth to engage in community activities. Jean Claude Mutabazi, Program Coordinator of Max Foundation, underscored the need for inclusivity and empowerment, urging Rotary youth to take an active role in shaping the future.
The second panel was conducted under the theme of “Leadership in Diversity” and was constituted by the Rwanda Defence Forces Spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Ronald Rwivanga as well as Rotarians from different clubs in Rwanda
The discussions resonated with the vision of Rotary, which sees youth engagement as integral to building a peaceful and prosperous world. Through initiatives like RYLA, Rotary Clubs of Rwanda continue to empower young leaders, instilling in them the values of service and leadership. As these young leaders embark on their journey, they carry with them the torch of hope and the promise of a brighter future for Rwanda and beyond.
