On August 25, 2024, the Rotary Club of Kigali Virunga (RCKV) proudly inducted three new members into its family. The ceremony, held at the picturesque Classic Hotel in Musanze, welcomed Rtn. Doreen Gahongayire Karake, Rtn. Stephen Senior, and Rtn. Stephen Junior into the vibrant community of Rotarians. Each inductee brings a unique story of commitment, service, and inspiration to the club.

Doreen Gahongayire Karake: From Doubt to Dedication
Rtn. Doreen Gahongayire Karake, parented by PHF Rtn. Peter Malinga, shared her transformative journey into Rotary. Initially hesitant about the organization, her perspective changed after meeting Rtn. Malinga at a work engagement in Nairobi. “He kept on telling me about the magic of Rotary,” she fondly recalled.
A seasoned advocate specializing in public-private partnerships, Rtn. Karake brings a wealth of expertise and passion to RCKV. Her commitment was evident as she traveled from the Ivory Coast to Kigali, then onward to Musanze for the induction ceremony. “I couldn’t afford to miss this day; I now feel right at home,” she said with pride.

Brothers in Service: Stephen Senior and Junior
Rtn. Stephen Senior and Rtn. Stephen Junior are not only blood brothers but also part of a family with a rich Rotary legacy. They were inducted by their cousin, PHF Rtn. Stephen, from the Rotary Club of Kampala.
Stephen Senior
A veteran of Rwanda’s Liberation War, Rtn. Senior is the proprietor of Kigali Infants’ Academy, a school renowned for providing high-quality education to children from all backgrounds. With a student population of 1,200, he extends full scholarships to over 10% of the learners, embodying Rotary’s commitment to basic education and literacy.

Having been a Rotaractor during his time at Makerere University, Rtn. Junior’s Rotary journey came full circle with his induction. Over the past decade, he has built one of Rwanda’s leading fish import and export companies, creating jobs and opportunities for many. Reflecting on his readiness to serve, he said, “The best time to become a Rotarian is when you feel ready.”
Their cousin and mentor, PHF Rtn. Stephen—also humorously referred to as “the third Steve” of the night—proudly shared, “He or she who serves best, benefits most.”

A Magical Evening
PHF Rtn. Peter Malinga’s enthusiasm set the tone for the ceremony as he welcomed Club President Rtn. Jacqueline Duniah to address the gathering. “As we start this new Rotary year, we are delighted to have you join us. We look forward to the magic you will bring to the Rotary movement,” she said.
The induction, held against the stunning backdrop of the Virunga Mountains, was part of RCKV’s Annual Retreat. The event was expertly emceed by Rtn. Sylvia Gasana and Rtn. David Butera, and the music, courtesy of recent club entrant Dennis, kept spirits high.

With 35 members in attendance, the night ended on a celebratory note, as members toasted the new Rotarians and danced late into the evening.
Indeed, it was a heartwarming homecoming for the newest members of the Rotary Club of Kigali Virunga, who are now ready to serve and inspire in true Rotary spirit.
